To jury the collection of your contribution of paintings is a proud moment for me. The Aquarius Exhibition has been a time-honored and prestigious exhibition in our community. This last year, we lost several pioneers and artistic giants who have been major supporters and leaders for us growing painters on the national level. I am proud to be included in this event to honor today’s painters who have picked up the banner and continue the tradition in art. You are our next generation.
How do I jury a show? I look for the paintings that stop me in my tracks. The ones I continue returning to view; I study the images repeatedly. They seem to have that “wow” factor. They hold my attention and are memorable. I also look for an original point of view. These paintings stand out because the painter had something to communicate and not merely reproducing a mediocre, seen-before image. And finally, for bestowing awards, I look for the painter who paints with the fire in the belly. It tells me that the painter really wanted to commit and make that painting.
Thank you, to all, for sending images of your creative efforts. I know it may be a nervous time, yet thrilling to get any feedback.
Thank you again. I love being invited!
Robert Burridge
Juror
Aquarius 2021 Exhibition presents the best in watermedia painting, representing a wide range of subject material and techniques, from experimental to traditional, and encourages support for watermedia painting as a vital, enduring and expressive medium.
Robert Burridge is a painter in all media, national juror, college and national workshop instructor and is the Honorary President of the International Society of Acrylic Painters. Signature Member of both the Philadelphia Watercolor Society and the ISAP, his honors include the prestigious Crest Medal for Achievement in the Arts and the Franklin Mint Awards. He was invited to have a solo exhibit of his abstract paintings at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art. Burridge’s country studio is located on California’s central coast in San Luis Obispo County.
“In 1985, I turned my passion into my second career. I retired from industrial design and became a full time, contemporary fine art painter, moved to California’s Central Coast and prepared to paint the rest of my life. Today, besides painting, I am an invited juror for international art shows, a college and national painting workshop instructor, and teach a fine art mentor program in central France. It is said, ‘Your heart doesn’t know how old you are.’ For me, it’s true. Painting everyday in my small studio overlooking the Pacific Ocean, I feel like a kid again playing with color, design, paint and canvas, which reminds me of the saying, ‘It’s never too late to be what you always should have been.’ Follow your bliss!”
