ANN SMIGA GREENE - Biography

Ann grew up near the Jersey Shore and has spent the past 30 years with her family in the picturesque farm country of Sussex County, New Jersey. She holds a B.S. in Medical Laboratory Technology and began her professional journey in healthcare before transitioning into information technology as an analyst.

Throughout her life, Ann nurtured a deep interest in painting, eventually choosing to pursue her artistic passion more seriously. She studied with artists whose work she admired, attending workshops and refining her technique. Since retiring, Ann has devoted herself to painting, developing a diverse and expressive body of work.

Ann now shares her love of art by teaching workshops and watercolor classes in her home studio, and adult education classes at Kittatinny Regional High School. She currently serves as the President of the New Jersey Watercolor Society. She is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society, Transparent Watercolor Society of America, Women in Watercolor, Garden State Watercolor Society, New Jersey Watercolor Society, and the International Society of Experimental Artists. Her work has been showcased in numerous exhibitions and publications, earning her a range of awards in both national and international competitions.

Workshop Description

Remarkable: Expressive Painting with Watercolor, Marks, and Gouache

Dive into expressive painting through playful gestures, layered color, and the fluid movement of watercolor pigments. In this workshop, you’ll explore loose watercolor washes, followed by spontaneous mark-making using tools like markers, pencils, and crayons. Gouache will be added to define shapes, increase contrast, and create areas of negative space—highlighting the dynamic relationship between shape, value, and key design principles. The emphasis is on emotion, movement, and personal expression, while also building a strong foundation in water media tools and techniques. Paint what you feel—layer by layer.

Open to artists of all levels, this workshop invites creative exploration without predetermined outcomes, planning, or drawing. Whether your work tends toward abstraction or representation, Ann will support you in developing your unique artistic voice. Bold strokes, dynamic compositions, and an openness to the unexpected are at the heart of this experience—allowing your art to evolve naturally and authentically.
